The 17-4 PH is chiefly composed of chromium, nickel, copper which makes the alloy exceptionally strong and hard upon heat treatment, and thereby making it in great demand in structural applications and pressure systems. This stainless steel is a precipitation hardened type, which offers great tensile strength and yield strength and hence is a very good substitute to carbon steels in addition to having significantly high corrosion resistance and resistance to stress cracking. Incorporation of 3-5 copper and variable level of niobium improves hardenability and strength of the pipes and provides stable mechanical characteristics under hard service conditions.
